Funeral Complex
Li
Muri
Arzachena (Sassari)

Among the archaeological monuments of Arzachena the late Neolithic necropolis of Li Muri is the most famous.

The necropolis is made up of four dolmenic cysts (tombs) and a small passageway. Each cyst is situated at the centre of a series of stone slabs arranged in concentric circles, able, presumably, to contain the burial mounds of earth.
Their diameter varies from 5.3 - 8.5 m. In the outer circle of every tomb the presence of menhirs is evident.
A small passageway is arranged slightly aside from the tombs, and is surrounded on three sides by the remains of an almost circular mound, which would have left the south-east facing entrance free.
This detail leads experts to think that the sepulchre may have been used several times. Joined on to the passageway is a sacred stone in quadrangular sections, enclosed by a series of vertical slabs.
OApart from the menhirs, the three cysts were also undoubtedly linked to the cult (0.40 x 0.50m), two of them situated in the space near the meeting points of the funeral circles. In the same place as well, there are two proto-anthropomorphic menhirs in a frontal position.
The complete lack of objects at the site does not allow us to establish its real function: it is only a possibility that the cysts contained food. The fact that the chemical composition of the land has almost totally destroyed the skeletal remains, too, means that any attempt to prove the exact function of the sepulchre are extremely difficult.
